Movement

Movement

****[Camera is in manual mode/ shutter priority mode.]****

Movement - Motion blur is the apparent streaking of rapidly moving objects in a still image or a sequence of images such as a movie or animation. It results when the image being recorded changes during the recording of a single exposure, either due to rapid movement or long exposure.

Feeze frame - an optical effect or technique in which a single frame of film is reprinted in a continuous series, which when shown gives the effect of a still photograph.

Movement - the act or process of moving people or things from one place or position to anotherThere is no strict definition for movement in photography as for example motion can be captured through Freeze Frame or motion Blur.

Panning - rotating a camera on its vertical or horizontal axis in order to keep a moving person or object in view or allow the film to record a panorama.

Research (of Artists and Techniques)

A photographer that I chose to study for my research on tone was a photographer called Ernst Haas. Ernst Haas March 2, 1921 – September 12, 1986 was a photojournalist and a pioneering colour photographer. During his 40-year career, the Austrian-born artist bridged the gap between photojournalism and the use of photography as a medium for expression and creativity.

Contact sheets

These contact sheets were taken in Newmarket. However, the training yards ride out early in the morning, around 7am. this means that in the winter the light is very poor. whilst taking theses photos I tried my hardest to compensate for the low light by having a slower shutter speed whilst trying to capture the fast moving horses. due to the everchanging camera settings I did not use a tripod. This meant that the surroundings around the horses were also moving which made for some unpleasant photos.

These contact sheets above were taken later that morning on another heath. However,  without a trainer, I was not allowed to get close to the track.  this meant that I had to take all my photos with my zoom lens.

My best images

Images that need improving

Here, the camera was on the wrong setting. the shutter speed was too low, causing the image to be too bright and to be blurry.

This photo is out of focus.

In these photos above, I have adjusted the brightness, contrast and exposure. I did this in order to bring out the horse shoe print in the sand. I think that this creates an interesting images with the forest litter surrounding it.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

I feel that the artist research was helpful during this project. I found that, when practising out on shoots, that I didn't like the way the images turned out when they were blurry like Ernest Haas. personally, I prefer still photos. however I did experiment with his method. if I were to reshoot these photos I would definitely try in better light.

In conclusion, these photos did not turn out 100% how I had hoped. However, if the lighting was better I feel like my photos would have been a lot better.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My idea for recording movement was to capture the horses moving on the training gallops in Newmarket. I do plan to return to try and capture some better photos when the natural lighting is better.

With reference to my best selected images: I feel that these images link to the topic and to the artist that I studied. I also feel like the work in which I have shown my focus on shape in nature through some different forms.

I feel like my images show my interpretation on movement, however I do consider the fact that they are not in the style of Ernest Haas. I will solve this by returning to Newmarket and capturing more photos in the spring.

AO2Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

To take my photos I used a Canon E10 1000D, with multiple lenses. Whilst on the shoots I played around with the aperture and shutter speeds on the camera, trying to create some interesting images. I had to keep adjusting these as the light went from really dark ( 6am ) to bright ( 11 am).

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of form, exploring the movement involving racehorses and the images of Ernst Haas.  The final images produced were refined by developing the photo in photoshop using a range of techniques.
